I started studying drawing and painting in the late seventies. in those days, it was difficult to find teachers of representational art. Abstract was the all the rage. When i found the plein-air painters of america,I was so excited and inspired. They were rather new as a group at that time. Kevin Macphearson, then president, had gathered together twenty of the member artists and one hundred student artists for a "first of it's kind" workshop. It took place in the summer of 1997 on the Perry Mansfield Campus in Steamboat Springs Colorado for almost a week. It was an incredible learning experience. Setting up for" en plein air painting" is a challenging feat for the first time. out door easels, palettes turpentine cans ect,all the necessary gear is almost harder to deal with than the application of paint to the canvas. At first i got more paint on me than anywhere. I had painted landscape, but soon realized how essential it was to paint from life. It is alot about the light which is constantly changing. now plein air is well known to many. We can thank papas group for putting fine representational painting back in the public eye.
For seventeen years, i have continued my wonderful journey. i paint often in my studio using my outdoor studies as referance.i have continued taking workshops with many of the papas who are all now very renowned artists . to name a few kevin macphearson, ralph oberg, matt smith,.ray roberts ken auster. Living here in san diego ca. i am surrounded by the most beautiful settings nature can provide. we started our own plein air group here in san diego In 1999.(papasans). every monday we gather and paint on location. from the inland lakes, canyons, mountains to the the sea.
e paint out in the fresh air. that is what plein air means. as you can see from my work, i have painted mostly on location in california and in arizona, idaho, wyoming, colorado, new mexico.i love the natural western landscape. Painting sizes are shown on close up viewing on my site.my prices vary by size from 9x12-18x24 inches. i will do commissions for larger paintings.my prices range from 600 to 1500.. if a client wants a specific scene painted, they could sent me several photos. i would do some preliminary sketches for them for their consideration. This situation would have to be discussed.the price of my paintings includes framing. i use gold, black, and a few silver frames. the widths will vary from two inches to three and one half.I have shown my work in many juried shows. california art club, laguna plein air painters, city of vista, san diego museum of art guild. national shows: oil painters of america, american impressionist society.I have received national awards, iam a signature member of the american impressionist society.
